The party wants to extend the Streets Ahead Incentive Program which would deliver home deposits to up to 100 people wishing to purchase homes in Hobart’s eastern suburbs.
The Streets Ahead program currently provides assistance to Housing Tasmania tenants who wish to purchase public housing.
Under Labor’s plan, $13,000 assistance grants would be opened up to other existing and new homes.
Labor housing spokesman Josh Willie said the first target areas of the scheme would be in Risdon Vale, Geilston Bay and Lindisfarne where affordable land was available.
“Not only is this about allowing more Tasmanians to become property owners but it will provide an important economic stimulus,” he said.
“For every new home built costing $300,000, the stimulus to the economy in jobs and construction will be up to $840,000.”
Human Services Minister Jacquie Petrusma said the real target was the upper house Pembroke election. “Even if fully implemented, on Labor’s own admission, it will help a grand total of just 100 people,” she said.
