The schools production 'Between the Crosses' offered a modern interpretation of how the younger generation views war and was a collaboration between dance and drama students and digital art students.
Brooks High School dance and drama production teacher, Bindy Stephens, said they didn't even know about the awards until after the students performed at the school’s annual Anzac Day assembly.
"We entered in the hope that our students might be celebrated for their commitment to honoring the courage and dignity of the diggers," she said.
"Our award was seeing them shine on the day and having our community come together to engage in the students event.”
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan announced the winners and said the quality of all 79 entrants had been extremely high.
“As a nation it is important that we never forget the service and sacrifice of the men and women who serve in defence of our country,” he said.
“We keep that memory alive by instilling respect for our wartime history and an understanding of the importance of Anzac Day in our future generations.”
Miss Stephens said the project focused on developing the students empathy and was a great opportunity to explore new skills and artistic techniques.
“We wanted the students to have ownership over the project and for them to find their voice,” she said.
“This recognition is just a huge boost for the arts.”
