Acting Inspector Ian Mathewson said drivers sometimes forgot about school speed zones following a break and became “impatient” with increased traffic and buses.
He advised commuters to allow for delays and stressed that young children needed to remain supervised “at all times” when walking on footpaths and crossing roads.
“The unpredictability of children should never be underestimated so slow down in school zones and stick to the traffic and parking rules,” Acting Inspector Mathewson said.
Police also took the opportunity to offer additional road safety tips.
They advised that pedestrians should cross at designated crossings “wherever possible”, that young children be supervised when waiting at bus stops and crossroads, and that flashing lights on school buses meant the vehicles were stopping to load or unload students, requiring drivers to slow to 40 kilometres per hour when within 50 metres.
