The Launceston teen moulded his sporting career with the South Esk Swimming Club from the age of seven.
James, 16, made a splash in the pool with two gold medals in the Victoria Championships in 2014.
He also broke three state records in the same year – the 200-metre backstroke, 100-metre backstroke and 100-metre freestyle.
He also found victory and records as a runner, in cross-country titles and on the track.
It was during this time that James was sparked with a new passion for cricket.
“I was playing cricket at the same time but I just enjoyed cricket more,” James said.
I obviously enjoyed my swimming and I gave it 100% but, I sort of lost passion for it in the end.
“At swimming, training all I could think about was cricket.
“I obviously enjoyed my swimming and I gave it 100 per cent but, I sort of lost passion for it in the end.”
The love of cricket saw James walk away from the pool, trading laps for runs on the board.
James’ cricket career started with the under-13 Emerging Tiger Program.
This led him to the under-15 Tasmanian cricket team, and then to his latest and greatest achievement, as part of the Tasmanian Development Team.
In early July, he toured Sri Lanka with the development team.
In the future, James would like to play cricket for Tasmania.
“It’s one of those things where you just have to wait and see what happens and I have to take it as it goes,” he said.
