Upon reflection, it seems a natural progression that Jason Sherriff would move into property development, a calling which requires the ability to see what isn’t there and create something from almost nothing, as well as a knack for the practical.

He began his working life as a timber harvester, sourcing everything from firewood to mill logs and specialty timbers. It was this process which required an ability to recognise the potential of an object that has stood him in good stead when it comes to seeing the future in a vacant block of land.
It’s all about seeing the wood and the trees.
At the same time he was harvesting timber, he was subcontracting trucks to a variety of clients including Launceston City Council.
This early enterprise prepared him well for the complex maze that is the world of civil construction.
Civil construction is a critical aspect of any development as it provides the framework on which the entire site is built.

- Jason Sherriff
Prior to teaming up with Wim, Jason, through Sherriff Civil Contracting, had already begun to diversify and specialise in subdivisions beginning in Newnham.
“I developed in excess of 100 lots privately and also did contract work for other developers and local councils.”
Growth Developments’ many projects now occupy a majority of Jason’s time and focus.
Having worked for himself since the age of 18, he relishes the level of control he has being self-employed, and this independence is key.
“You are in control of your own destiny, assuming responsibility for the decisions you make,” Jason said.
“There’s also the flexibility to set your own direction.”
On the downside, of course, it is a 24/7 commitment, something you can’t just walk away from and at times, nothing else matters.
“You just have to get it done.”
But just like those logs all those years ago, Jason can see the potential in this area and has the means and the ability to help realise it.
