With daffodils the show’s highlight, Westbury Garden Club president Heather Clarke expects about 200 people to attend the Saturday show.
“In the daffodil section, the exhibitors are well-known growers. So there will be a daffodil championship and all the different categories of daffodils will be judged,” she said.
“There is an open division for the top daffodils, an intermediate and then there is a beginners section. There is a floral art section, there is usually a section for daffodil seedlings aswell and a section for the juniors too.”
Mrs Clarke said the daffodils exhibited are different to those that grow in the normal garden.
“They have been pampered a little more than the ones where the snails might have eaten a leaf – you wouldn’t enter ones like that,” she said.
“What they are exhibiting are beautiful flowers. The colour ranges are improving all the time because growers are crossing them and have need seedling breeds.
The judges will be looking for daffodils that are the perfect size, colour, form and whether the head of the flower is sitting correctly on the stem.
“They take a long time over judging looking for imperfections,” Mrs Clarke said.
Entrants come from all over the state, with about 50 people competing in the whole show and six in the top daffodil section.
“The local entries would be more in the novice or the intermediate section. We also have a cut flower section and that is quite often local exhibitors. There is a big range of flowers and shrubs that they can put in that section,” she said.
The club members also cook an afternoon tea.
“We’re quite well known for the afternoon tea, people come just because they like it. They love the homemade goodies. It’s well worth it you wont need your tea when you go home that’s for sure,” Mrs Clarke said.
The show is being held at the Westbury Town Hall on Saturday from 1.30pm. The event finishes at 4pm. Entry is $2, afternoon tea is $5.
Competitors will be setting up from 8am, with judging to be held at midday.
