At this stage, he’s not sure whether it will be in short races or staying events but, either way, Curran cannot lose.
The Master Speed was given to him for free by former owner Bob Lynch so any wins are a bonus for Curran and his daughter Alycia who now race the gelding in partnership.
They already have one victory in the bag, with The Master Speed scoring on the synthetic track last month at only his second start for Curran.
He had won four races previously but none beyond 1400 metres.
For that reason, Curran is keen to see how The Master Speed performs in Sunday’s 1880m race.
“He’s supposed to stay but I don’t know if he does,” the trainer said.
“Sunday will tell me and I’ll know which way to go with him in future.
“If he shows he can run the distance, races like the Longford Cup become an option. If not, he’s a pretty good horse fresh over shorter trips.”
Curran, a former jockey, trains only a small team as a hobby.
“I’ve only got him and Silver Reset in work at the moment and I will soon be turning them both out for a month,” he said.
“They can spend a bit of time on the spring grass and I won’t mind a few weeks’ rest myself.
“Then I’ll bring them back in and start again.”
Only eight horses have accepted for the Distance Final where Devonport Cup winner Powercharged is topweight with 59kg.
Siorca, winner of the same race last year, will also be among the favourites, along with in-form mare Secrets She Has.
Like The Master Speed, Secrets She Has is unproven at 1880m although she was a strong winner over 1650m in the prelude.
The biggest difference this week is that she goes up 5kg in a non-claiming race with senior jockey Siggy Carr replacing apprentice Teagan Voorham.
The Distance Final is the last feature race of the Devonport winter carnival but there is another meeting at the track on Sunday week.
Night racing resumes at Mowbray on Wednesday, September 27.
