Netball Tasmania’s chief executive Aaron Pidgeon refuses to rule out the state bidding for a Super Netball franchise of its own once its partnership with the first-year Collingwood Magpies expires at the end of 2019.

Pidgeon had succeeded the outgoing Julia Phillips on June 1, coming from a netball coaching background that included the assistant role for the Tasmanian Magpies ANL entity earlier this year.
While returning Test match netball back to the Silverdome still falls behind addressing the grassroots game, he felt Netball Tasmania must consider putting its hand up when a decision is made to expand this year’s inaugural competition.
“I haven’t yet had that conversation with my board, but in my opinion and like in another sport, we’d be crazy not to consider it,” he said.
“There are a range of things that need to be considered, but we still should absolutely be setting our sights on that and seeing what we can do to make that happen.
“That’ll only ever happen if it’s genuinely viable in a commercial sense and we have got the athletes to be competitive.”
Pidgeon saw first hand a number of elite Tasmanian netballers filter their way into the powerful Magpies brand with Collingwood’s feeder side in a tough initiation.
Launceston had hosted its first Test in three decades last October when Australia and New Zealand took part in the Constellation Cup series.
Tickets for the occasion sold out in under five minutes, but Tasmanians will have to wait until past 2019 before the Diamonds return to the Silverdome court.
“The current schedule is set, so at this point in time we are not on the radar for a Diamonds game next year,” Pidgeon said.
“We do have the Collingwood SSN game scheduled and a home round of ANL.
“We’re hoping to host a pre-Commonwealth Games international event in Tasmania at this stage.
“The message I would like to send is that although we really want to pursue those opportunities and it’s a fantastic spectacle, we’ve got to ensure we balance that out with our grassroots program and developing our people.”
