City of Launceston General Manager Robert Dobrzynski said the start date of March 2018 was an indicative timeframe only of what the council would like to achieve.
“There are a number of processes we need to go through, not the least of which is to finish the current round of public consultation on the design, with an opportunity open to the public now for four weeks to find out more about the project at our St John Street pop-up shop,” he said.
“We will also need to determine a contractor to undertake the works, and work with them and business owners to find a works program that will have the least negative impact on the mall during construction.”
Mr Dobrzynski said it was “a bit soon” to be confirming definite timeframes.
“All we can say at this point is that we expect the Brisbane St Mall redevelopment to be a major focus of the council in the first half of 2018,” he said,
“The final design will dictate whether a Development Application is required, however we believe it is unlikely that a DA will be necessary.”
He said Launceston's central business district deserved contemporary public spaces, which are accessible and compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act.
Staff will be available at the pop-up shop every Tuesday and Thursday between 12pm and 2pm to answer questions, until the start of September.
