Four pygmy marmosets have travelled from Mogo Zoo on the New South Wales South Coast on Tuesday to a new habitat.
Known as the smallest monkeys in the world, the creatures are native to South America and feel most at home in a warm climate.
Tasmania Zoo head zookeeper Emma Morgan said she expected the pygmies to feel comfortable, despite the Tasmanian temperatures.
“We’ve set them up with some heat lamps so I’m sure they’ll be fine,” she said.
While they may seem like a good pet, they do not like to be left alone and need the company of their own kind to develop.
Clever and highly inquisitive, pygmy marmosets can get bored quite easily and constantly need new challenges to keep them occupied.
They can live for up to 15 years and spend the first two months of their life on their father’s back.
The pygmies, which have arrived at Tasmania Zoo, are all different ages.
