The cool season strategy would be a joint venture between the city council, Tourism Northern Tasmania and Business Events Tasmania.
By collaborating, the three organisations hope to create shared objectives, share information to avoid calendar clashes and develop promotional assets.
At Monday’s Strategic Planning and Policy Committee meeting the council has been asked to consider co-funding the new job, contributing $50,000 over three years to the strategy and establishing a Memorandum of Understanding.
The goals were identified in the Cool Season Events Research Project which was managed by TNT.
The findings of the study indicated that there could be substantial benefit to the region by targeting sports events including: bowls, cricket, cycling, football, hockey, motocross, multisport, netball, orienteering, rowing, rugby, soccer, swimming and tennis.
A key recommendation was also the creation of the 1.0 FTE position.
The person in the role would collaborate with state and national associations to develop long-term event attraction strategies, advocate for incentive funding at local and state levels, oversee event calendar management and create networks between sporting associations and clubs, venues and funders.
