The Australian Government’s Organ and Tissue Authority invites all Tasmanians to join the Australian Organ Donor Register as part of DonateLife Week (July 30 to August 6).
About 1400 Australians are on waiting lists for a life-saving organ transplant.
This year’s theme is “Make your donation decision count. Register today and discuss your decision with your loved ones”.
Figures released by DonateLife in Tasmania show nine in 10 families agree to organ donation proceeding when their loved one is a registered donor, yet two in three Australians are yet to join the donor register.
An organ and tissue donor can save and improve the lives of 10 or more people.
Australia has an opt-in organ donation policy, which means Australians need to register if they want to become an organ donor.
Tasmania has one of the highest percentages of the eligible population, 16-years-old and older, on the donor register, but DonateLife in Tasmania hopes more people will help end the wait for others needing a transplant or on dialysis.
The Australian Government, alongside State and Territory Governments, has implemented a national reform program to lift donation rates.
