Baptist leader Matt Selby made his presence felt on the comeback trail from injury scoring a goal and taking the best on ground accolades from the umpires.
The Hawks’ defense was under pressure most of the day from the fast-paced juniors in the Baptist line-up, with Jake Wolfe adding two to his personal tally.
Veteran Roger Ambrose was the Hawks’ stand-out performer as he, with keeper Jared Bomford, did their best to stem the onslaught.
The Smithton Saints gave their more-fancied rivals a solid stoush in the opening match in Launceston.

The Q’s Evan Lawrence opened their account minutes into the second half but the lead was short-lived as the Saints’ Joe Coombs converted a penalty stroke three minutes later.
A third rebound in the Saints’ circle, collected by Bryce Blacklow, resulted in a goal giving the Q’s the lead.
The Saints’ never-say-die scrapping play came to the fore as the game wore on with Logan Buckby scoring the leveller with just minutes left on the clock, a 2-all draw the end result.
City Marians easily accounted for West Devonport by five goals, four in the first half to the Dragons’ nil.
Dragons coach Fred Bessell inspired the team at the big break, with the Dragons matching the Bloods for most of the second half scoring two goals, while the Bloods managed three for a final score of 7-2
Liam Grundy was the danger man for the Bloods creating plenty of opportunities taking the top umpires vote for the day. Luke Redman held the Dragons’ defense earning the notice of the umpires for the Dragons.
Devonport hosted Tamar in a fast-paced, close encounter with Tamar keeper Eugene Van Niekerk covering the Tamar defense, keeping them within reach of the Subbies.
A single goal separated the sides at the long break with the Subbies’ Callum Dubeld conversion of a penalty corner.
In the second half Tamar tried to level the playing field but Devonport stretched the lead to 2-0 from the stick of Ben Loone.
South Launceston Suns defeated Launceston City 4-1 in the late local derby.
Suns coach Al McBain started the goal flow with a rocket drag flick in the opening minutes, adding another late in the game to take the score to four.
Kurt Budgeon’s devastating form added further pressure to the City defense, notching a single for the game.
