Launceston trio Daria Bannister, Courtney Webb, Georgia Hill and East Launceston under 16 player Mia King make up four of the seven Tasmanians who will fly to Gold Coast on Friday.
Standout performances at the July 10-15 championships will result in selection for an All Stars game in Melbourne, which will be eagerly watched by AFLW talent scouts.
As the only Tasmanian to win selection for last year’s All Stars game, Bannister is looking forward to working under AFLW premiership coach Bec Goddard, who will coach Allies at the five-day carnival.
“I think it’s a good opportunity for us all,” Bannister said.
“It’s good exposure and (Goddard) will know what she’s on about so it’s good for us.
“A lot of those girls I got to play with (in the All Stars game) made the AFLW teams this year, so it was good to watch them and know that I’ve played alongside those girls as well.”
While King will need to wait two more years to put her hand up for the draft, Bannister, Hill and Webb are all eligible to be drafted this year.
Webb - also a state cricket representative - said while spaces on AFLW lists would be hard to come by this year, it was encouraging to see so many Tasmanians in the frame for selection.
“(Every Tasmanian) that’s in this Allies team is from Northern Tasmania... so that’s a pretty good effort from the Northern half of the state and to have seven girls out of Tassie is pretty remarkable,” Webb said.
“It’s going to be hard to get into it this year as there’s no extra teams but in the next couple of years there’s going to be a couple more girls teams added, so that gives us a better opportunity to make it if we don’t make the cut this year.”
North-West footballers Lauren Stevenson and twins Libby and Chloe Haines also made the squad.
