The wife of prominent medical practitioner Gary Fettke has urged the City of Launceston to address preventative health in the city.

Belinda Fettke presented to the council’s strategic planning and policy committee (SPPC) meeting on Monday to discuss a national campaign Rethink Sugary Drinks.

Mrs Fettke recently attended the Rethink Sugary Drinks conference in Melbourne recently with former Legislative Council candidate Emma Anglesea.

The aim of the conference was to get local government to think about ways they could address healthy eating and preventative health strategies into their communities.

“It’s not about reinventing the wheel,” Mrs Fettke said.

“We have to find ways of making it easier for them [the community, to access healthy food].”

The presentation was supported by Alderman Hugh McKenzie and Robin McKendrick, who both spoke about the importance of the message.

Dr Fettke is a prominent Launceston orthopaedic surgeon, who has been often outspoken in his advocacy of a low-sugar, low-carbohydrate diet.

Last year Dr Fettke was advised by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency to stop providing nutritional advice to his clients.

He was investigated by AHPRA for more than two years after an anonymous complaint was made to the regulatory body.

Dr Fettke was advised by AHPRA to stop providing nutrition advice and its relation to the management of diabetes and treatment or prevention of cancer.
