He’s a defender, not a forward.
Playing his first game since round 23 last year, the much-maligned 26-year-old from North Hobart impressed with his attack on the ball and ability to shut Jon Patton out of the Carlton’s dramatic win over Greater Western Sydney.
Jones’ intercept work was exceptional as he finished with 14 disposals [seven intercepts] at disposal efficiency of 93 per cent, eight marks and 14 spoils, while Patton finished with 2.0 from 10 touches and three marks.
Out of contract at the end of the season, output similar to this could see Jones’ AFL life extended.
Saturday night was a significant one for Launceston’s Thomas Bellchambers as Essendon defeated Port Adelaide.
It was the first time the 27-year-old ruckman had tasted victory at the AFL level since round 8, 2015, having lost the remainder of that season to injury and last year to suspension.
Bellchambers subdued the influence of former teammate Paddy Ryder, winning 23 hit-outs and a season-best 16 possessions.
It came a week after he matched it with Shane Mumford as he tightens his grip on Essendon’s number one ruck spot.
Clarence’s Josh Green looked dangerous, and finished with 0.3 from 11 touches, two marks and three tackles.
Maverick Weller’s 100-game milestone on Friday night was soured by a right ankle issue late in the first term of St Kilda’s loss to Adelaide.
He provided a presence in attack after returning to the ground, and finished with 17 touches [eight contested], four marks, seven tackles, 0.2 and seven score involvements,
Teammate Jimmy Webster, from Glenorchy, had 22 touches, took four marks and laid five tackles from defence, while Hobart’s Hugh Greenwood had 17 touches and laid three tackles across half-forward for the Crows.
Injury also struck Burnie’s Brady Grey, who hurt his right hamstring in the opening quarter of Fremantle’s loss to Brisbane.
Teammate Lachie Weller, also originally from Burnie, had 11 touches, took four marks and snuck forward to snag 1.0.
Glenorchy’s Ryan Harwood had a role inside attacking 50 and finished with 11 touches, three marks and four tackles.
Launceston’s Jesse Lonergan was a late inclusion for Gold Coast against Hawthorn, and was a solid performer with 22 touches, three marks, three clearances, six tackles and five score involvements.
Hobart’s Aaron Hall had 23 touches, three marks, two tackles, 0.2 and six score involvements, while Launceston’s Kade Kolodjashnij had 20 possessions, six marks and five score involvements, three marks, three clearances, six tackles and five score involvements.
MacKenzie Willis, formerly of the Tigers, had 12 touches in defence for the victorious Suns.
On Monday, Dodges Ferry’s Jeremy Howe put forward his latest mark of the year nomination while collecting 22 touches, taking 10 marks and laid three tackles down back for Collingwood in their win over Melbourne.
