Organised by the Beacon Foundation and partnered by the Country Club Tasmania, the challenge aims to give students first-hand experience in the workforce, with a big prize at the end.
“Part of the criteria for the Dessert Challenge is to create something that can be showcased in the Links Buffet,” Country Club Tasmania’s food and beverage manager Ross Hannah said.
The students are expected to consider the cost of the dessert, and its suitability as a buffet dessert.
Students from Kings Meadows and Prospect High schools , as well as Newstead College, took part in the launch. The participants did a blind tasting of some of the Links desserts.
“From here, the students will go off and create desserts. They’ll hold a competition at school and the winners of the challenge will come back and have a bit of a cook of in a couple of weeks.
The winning dessert will be showcased on the Links Buffet for three months.
Beacon Foundation business engagement manager Lynda McKay said getting first-hand work experience was vital.
“This opens their eyes into a different diversity of careers in the industry and also what is involved in the day to day experience,” she said.
