Dr Sophie Oosterwijk, from the Netherlands, will speak on Tuesday, July 4, to provide an in-depth insight into the seventheen-century artistic scene and the Dutch Republic culture of the time.
Dr Oosterwijk will present a lecture titled ‘Wine, Women and Song? Dutch Genre Painting by Vermeer and his Contemporaries’ considering the often complex intrigues hiding in the paintings of classic seventeenth-century Calvinist society.
The lecture will present commentary on works by both famous and less-known painters and will consider what can be gleaned about Dutch life and society.
Dr Oosterwijk has an MA and a PhD in English Literature, an ME in medieval studies, and a PhD in the histry of art.
She currently lectures at the University of Cambridge.

Tickets $30 including refreshments. The lecture will be held at the Sir Raymond Ferrall Centre, UTAS Newnham campus on Tuesday, July 4 from 6pm.
