Primary Industries Minister Jeremy Rockliff announced on Wednesday that the upcoming state budget would include $1.2 million to create the new facility within Analytical Services Tasmania.
Many of the state’s shellfish industries have been temporarily brought to a halt in recent years due to naturally occurring toxic algal blooms.
Currently, testing for shellfish biotoxins is done interstate, but Mr Rockliff said the new facilities would result in faster testing times.
“The state-of-the-art facility will undertake the compliance testing required to ensure the highest possible product quality,” he said.
“Local biotoxin testing facilities will not only benefit oyster growers but also the rock lobster, abalone, scallop and clam industries.”
The new facilities at New Town were announced after collaborations between the Tasmanian Seafood Industry Council, Oysters Tasmania and the government.
