Tasmanian badminton player Kayden Gardner has bowed out of action at the Australasian under-17 badminton championships in Launceston.

Gardner, from Yolla, lost his first round match to Queensland’s Justine Obial 21-19, 21-6 and bowed out of the consolation plate with a defeat to SA’s Gavin Ong 21-6, 21-7.

No.1 seed Edward Lau won both of his matches in the first two rounds beating WA’s Ryan Chan 21-4, 21-6 and fellow New Zealander Jack Wang 21-8, 21-10, in the second round.

Girls No.1 seed Zecily Fung, of NSW, also progressed untroubled with a 21-17, 21-11 victory over NZ’s Sophie Li and a 21-17, 21-16 win over Anjali Bhujun from WA.

The No. 2 seeds in Victorian Ryan Venpin and NSW Amelia Lowe are also through to round 3. Quarter finals and semi-finals will be played in singles, doubles and mixed on Friday with grand finals in the main draw decided on Saturday and 120 players taking part.
