The remains of 24-year-old Tyson Timothy Clark-Robertson are believed to have been found in a shallow grave at Mayfield on Wednesday.
Police suspect he was murdered, and have three people in custody.
Tyson’s father Tim Clark said he was devastated by the news.
“I love my son and I cherish good times with him,” he said.
“It’s a hard time and I miss my son. It feels like my heart’s been pulled apart.”
Detective Inspector Philippa Burk fought back tears as she addressed the media on Wednesday.
“This is a very, very distraught day for that family no matter what the outcome of this is, and I would ask everybody to remember that and respect that.
“If it transpires that this is our missing person, he’s somebody’s son, he’s somebody’s brother and I would ask that the whole community respect that and think about that.”
Mr Clark-Robertson was last seen at the Newnham IGA on July 19 last year. Concerned family members notified police on March 10.
After an “extremely intense and exhaustive” investigation by Northern CIB detectives, police were led to a house at Mayfield, where they found human remains.
“As a result of some searches and some interviews conducted with witnesses yesterday, we’ve been given information that has led us to attend those premises,” Detective Inspector Burk said.
“In relation to the investigation so far and the information we have, it is highly probable that it may be our missing person, but … there are formal steps to identify who that person is.
“At this point in time, clearly the investigation is focusing on a murder investigation.”
Three Mayfield people have been charged in relation to the alleged murder, including a 45-year-old man, a 53-year-old man, and a 19-year-old woman.
One man appeared in court on Wednesday evening and the other man and woman will appear in court on June 7.
Detective Inspector Burk said no weapon had been located.
“Anybody would be fairly foolish to think that after being missing for so long that he is still missing and that he hasn’t come to some sort of harm at somebody else’s hands.”
