Derby set to host Round 2 of mountain bike's Enduro World Series

And after the treacherous mud and rain-soaked tree roots in New Zealand’s opening round, the 300-strong field can expect little respite with showers and 14 degrees forecast for the North-East on Sunday.

As far as mountain biking goes, Derby will be the centre of the universe when the series takes a giant leap into the unknown.

Designed by Glen Jacobs, the Blue Derby network has a growing reputation inside Australia but this will be its first international competition as riders tackle seven timed stages over 57 kilometres separated by untimed transitions with 1500m of climbing totalling some eight hours in the saddle.

Enduro race director Ian Harwood said: “The trails here in Derby are incredible and we’re looking forward to seeing the world’s best riders tackling them.

“The local community has really thrown itself behind this event and the amount of work they’ve put in has been monumental.

“The legacy of this event speaks for itself – the trail network has already increased considerably and having the spotlight on Tasmania ensures its place on the map of world class mountain biking destinations.”

After the crazy weather in Rotorua, the competition is wide open heading into Round 2.

Cecile Ravanel (Commencal Vallnord) tops the women’s category after last year’s runner-up, fellow Frenchwoman Isabeau Courdurier (SUNN), pulled out of round one due to illness. Germany’s Ines Thoma (Canyon Factory) sits second with Anita Gehrig (Ibis Cycles), of Switzerland, in third.

An all-Kiwi men’s podium saw Wyn Masters (GT Factory Racing) joined by brother Eddie and Matt Walker. All three will face fierce competition with Australian Sam Hill (Chain Reaction Cycles Mavic) hungry for a win on home soil and America’s reigning world champion Richie Rude (Yeti Fox) looking to claw back points after a disappointing 21st place to start his season.
