“My big goal is to stay injury-free because I’m getting married six days later so my aim is to go on my honeymoon with no broken arms and legs,” he said.
The 23-year-old teacher is getting married to Grace Elkhair the following Saturday at Grindelwald but said he couldn’t resist being part of history as Derby hosts the inaugural Australian leg of the global event.
“I said to Grace ‘I’ve got a very important event so we’re going to have to move the wedding’,” he joked.
“She’s been very good about it and the bonus is my parents are flying in from the mainland for the wedding so can come and watch the bike race as well.
“It is once in a lifetime stuff. These opportunities are few and far between so I hope it all goes to plan.”
Matthews, who moved to Launceston from Hobart for university in 2012 and graduated in 2015, was also grateful for the leave pass from his employer Launceston Christian School.
