The Tasmanians overcame the muggy weather on Sunday morning at Blacktown International Sportspark to outplay Northern Territory 13.10 (88) to 5.9 (39).
Coach Lance Spaulding credited the performance on improving from the state’s three heavy losses in 2016 to better postseason planning off the field and preseason hard work on the field.
“It’s been a long sort of campaign. Even though it’s been steady building, we’ve been going in with high hopes and the boys were just fantastic today in very difficult conditions,” he said.
Mariners led by four goals at the first change and had doubled their score by half-time while also holding the Territorians to just one goal.
“It went up another level the type of football we had to play,” Spaulding added.
“They (Mariners) were really hard, tackled well and got the game on their terms.”
