Clifford Craig Foundation CEO Peter Milne said the foundation was excited by the new relationship.
“Following extensive consultation ... it became apparent there would be benefit for both the hospital and the foundation if the purpose of the existing program was expanded,” Mr Milne said.
Mr Milne said medical research would remain the core priority, and funding support would be “broadened to include the purchase of medical equipment, patient facilities and professional staff education.”
Donations to the LGH will be administered by the foundation and given to the most appropriate areas of need, and as requested by philanthropic supporters. The foundation’s new role in LGH fundraising will sit alongside fundraising bodies including hospital auxiliaries and the Holman Clinic Trust (North). Tasmanian Health Service North and North-West clinical operations group director Eric Daniels said public donations were important because while the LGH was part of the THS, government funding was limited and there were often no funds to support research and training. Mr Daniels said the foundation would assist to fill that funding gap and “where considered desirable, provide support to enable the hospital’s doctors, nurses, researchers and allied health professionals to achieve optimal patient outcomes by providing them with the knowledge, skills and technology that may not otherwise be afforded them due to budgetary constraints”. Health Minister Michael Ferguson said he supported the proposal. He said while the state government would continue to increase its support for the LGH, “additional donations will help the hospital remain at the forefront of leading edge patient care, treatment methods and technology”.
