Twenty-two wickets fell for just 168 runs as both team’s bowlers ran rampant over their opposition batsmen.
The Hurricanes won the toss and elected to bat first on a flat, hard pitch and with Adam Drinkwell (34) anchoring the innings, the home side moved to 2-58 after 26 overs. But the hour either side of the lunch break belonged to the Orions, as Sam Robinson (4-37), Sam Fogg (3-19) and Chris Lindsay (2-31) bowled outstanding spells to trigger a collapse of 5-20.
The Hurricanes middle order crumbled and they were teetering at 8-78, before 39 lower order runs from James Odgers (28) and Tyler Johns (14 not out) saw them eventually bowled out for 117 just prior to tea.
Devonport appeared to have the momentum but the Hurricanes bowlers had other ideas, skittling the Orions for just 49 in the final session.
Five Devonport batsmen were out for ducks, with Andre de Lange (20), Bruce Will (12) and Tyler Dell (11) the only players to reach double figures as the ladder leaders lost their last six wickets for just three runs.
Adam Drinkwell (2-6) and Tyler Johns (2-22) delivered the early breakthroughs before teenage paceman Shaun Redman (3-7) and Pearce Watling (3-1) destroyed the Orions. The Hurricanes faced five overs prior to stumps but lost openers Adam Drinkwell and Brodie Hayes for ducks to finish at 2-2. with the Hurricanes holding a 70-run lead with eight wickets in hand.
