The Invermay building, which last operated as a cinema in 1969, will host a three-day festival full of films, history presentations, and parties.
Its revamp was announced mid-last year. Co-director Paul Lee-Archer said the open weekend would give the public a chance to have a look at the building before it began its transformation.
Mr Lee-Archer said a temporary film screen would be set up for the weekend.
Other events will include presentations on the history of cinema, and architecture, in Launceston.
There will also be a chance the celebrate the building’s 1930s-roots, with a Great Gatsby-themed party on Saturday night.
“The whole idea of it is to engage the community with what we’ve got planned for the Star, before we start the actual renovating,” Mr Lee-Archer said.
“We’re lucky that there’s quite a lot of the original fittings still inside, for people to look at.”
He said it was hoped that renovations would be finished in late 2017.
Tickets for the festival are on sale now, at launcestontickets.com.au, from $10 for adults.
More details around the program, and the Great Gatsby party, will be announced by the end of the week.
