The excited students returned home to Launceston on Friday with 10 major awards across the three teams – Golden Diversity, Instant Transmission and Zeal Tech Racing. Instant Transmission came in third, meaning Tasmania, and more specifically, Queechy, dominated the event.
The national competition was held in Adelaide, following months of designing, testing and building miniature F1 race cars. Students used sophisticated 3D CAD engineering software, virtual aerodynamics software, a desktop wind tunnel, industry-standard 3D printers, and manufacturing equipment to create their models.
As well as taking top spot on the podium, Golden Diversity also won Best Engineered Design and Best Manufactured Car. They beat Australia’s best 26 teams to win their spot at the World Finals in Kuala Lumpur later this year.
Instant Transmission came in third overall, and clocked the quickest lap, of 1.027 seconds down the 20-metre computer-timed race track. Zeal Tech Racing won two awards and was a finalist in the knockout racing session.
“We’ll be working really hard for the next six months and then competing at the World Finals in Malaysia,” Golden Diversity team manager Yara Alkhalili said. “Lots of hours went into it – school time, after school, in the holidays we were at school everyday.”
