The alternative rockers have started 2017 with a bang, performing at the state’s two premier food festivals The Taste and Festivale and locking in a new rhythm section, with Pop Noi’Sop duo Josef Bound and Tom Harvey taking over drums and bass duties respectively.
Fans will be pleased to hear that a host of new tunes are also on the way – some of which will be debuted at the band’s Gunners Arms show on Friday night.
Vocalist Sarah Triffitt said she hoped the gig would provide fans with a taster of the band’s revitalised lineup and recent evolution in sound.
“We're putting on this gig at the Gunners on Friday because we haven’t done a small, intimate local gig for a while, and this gig in particular is a local celebration of the rebirth of Paper Souls,” Triffitt said.
“Having a new drummer and bass player has just brought a whole new fresh vibe and new positive energy (to the band).
“The music has evolved quite a bit over the past 12 to 18 months where it's gone from being alternative folk and transitioned into more of a straight rock sound.”
Having enjoyed a quieter 2016, the band is looking to visit all four corners of the state in 2017 while continuing to write and release new material.
Triffitt said the band’s new single – recorded earlier this month and set for release in March – will make its first appearance at the Friday show.
But you’ll have to guess which one it is.
“Nobody will know it’s the new single, we’re going to sneak it in without announcing it,” Triffitt said.
“We've got other new music as well that we're playing on Friday night that we'll probably record in the near future as well, not necessarily for an album as such, I think we're more focused on releasing singles at this point.
“We'll probably smash out a few singles over the next three to six months, and just keep churning out new music and hopefully play a few more gigs around Tassie.”
Paper Souls will play alongside Leo Creighton, Cotton Pony and Disrepute at the Gunners Arms on Friday.
Doors will open at 8.30pm, with tickets available at the door for $5.
