Last financial year, more than 340,000 people visited the site, and numbers are already up 10 per cent from this time last year.
The redevelopment is the largest ever undertaken by the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority and has been self-funded through the savings and borrowing of the group.
Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority chief executive Stephen Large said the revamped centre would better be able to accommodate the number of people walking through the doors.
"One of the things the new facility will do will help us to alleviate the queues and process people far quicker," Mr Large said.
Heritage Minister Matthew Groom said the work was set to be completed by the end of 2017.
“What we've seen at Port Arthur, as we've seen right around Tasmania, is a significant increase in tourism numbers,” Mr Groom said.
