While most of the nation is battling a heatwave, Tasmania is in for cooler temperatures, gusty winds and  snow fall as low as 1000 metres on Sunday.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Tristen Oakley said a cold front is expected to move across Tasmania on Sunday, causing snow flurries around the Central Plateau.

“Everywhere else is under the influence of a high pressure system,” Mr Oakley said. 

“Because we are a bit further south, we are in a south-westerly wind flow, so we miss out on all that hot air and the dry conditions,” he said.

In contrast, Saturday’s conditions were mild with Launceston reaching a maximum of 24 degrees. 

A cool change is expected to hit late Sunday, with strong gusty winds expected to reach 80km/h in exposed areas. 

With a maximum of 17 degrees predicted for Launceston on Sunday, anyone heading to Festivale should pack a coat.
