Police are searching for two men in connection to the attempted ATM explosion at Ravenswood shopping centre about 3.30am on Friday.
Detective Inspector Philippa Burk said a 42-year-old man is in custody, but police are searching for two men wearing dark clothing.
The men are described as tall and thin.
“The public in general can be absolutely buoyed by the fact that the professional and swift approach of Tasmania Police officers has thwarted what could’ve otherwise been a very serious incident,” Detective Inspector Burk said.
Police wouldn’t comment on what kind of device was used.
UPDATE 9.26am:
A 42-year-old man has been arrested in relation to an attempted ATM explosion at Ravenswood on Friday morning.
Police said the man remains in custody while further investigations are conducted.
Detective Inspector Philippa Burk said the attempt was not successful and no one was injured.
Tasmania Police will speak in Launceston at 10am regarding the incident.

Police are investigating after a homemade explosive device was detonated outside a Ravenswood ATM.
According to residents, the incident occurred about 3.30am on Friday.
Detectives scoured the scene until about 8am, taking fingerprints from the Commonwealth Bank machine.
Very little damage was caused.
Tasmania Police is expected to issue a statement on Friday morning.
