The federal government has begun investigating ways to deal with the decline in apprenticeships and the skills shortage in Tasmania.

Vocational Education and Training Assistant Minister Karen Andrews was in Launceston on Wednesday meeting apprentices at Glasgow Engineering.
“I’m keen to learn as much as I can about apprentices, apprenticeships and what we can do to meet the skills shortages that we know exist around the country, and particularly here in Tasmania,” she said. “Glasgow Engineering is a very good example of how to recruit, train and retain apprentices, and that’s a key priority for us.”
The number of people on apprenticeships fell for the fourth consecutive year to June 2016, according to figures from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research.
There were 7,700 apprentices in training last financial year, compared to 8,500 the previous year and 12,900 in 2012.
“We know we’ve got a lot of work to do to increase the number of apprentices,” Ms Andrews said.
