Seventeen-year-old Margaret Mary Lore, of Richmond, was with a group of friends when she fell 15 metres from the top of a cliff at Blackmans Bay, south of Hobart.
Miss Lore had been at a party nearby in Summerleas Road before leaving with the group and heading to Blowhole Road.
Tasmania Police Inspector David Wiss said Miss Lore had decided to climb the safety fence, along with her friends, before she lost her footing and fell onto the rocks below.
Uniformed police, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and police boats attended the scene about midnight, but she died as a result of her injuries.
Inspector Wiss said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.
“There is nothing to suggest the incident was anything other than a tragic accident with some youths making some misjudgements.”
Miss Lore’s family was notified on Sunday.
“Our thoughts are with her parents and her friends, who have all been traumatised by this,” Inspector Wiss said.
“We will be ensuring the appropriate support is provided.”
Police are investigating whether alcohol was a contributing factor.
Witnesses, including about half-a-dozen friends who were with Miss Lore when she fell, are helping police with their investigation. Anyone with information should contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
