Cricket Tasmania Chairman Andrew Gaggin said on Saturday that Wright’s contract would not be renewed following three unsuccessful years in the job.
Wright guided Hobart to the BBL04 final and also the 2014 Champions League semi-final, but failed to play finals cricket since.
The Canes finished BBL06 with a 3-5 win/loss record.
“The club’s on-field performance over the past couple of years has been below expectations and the board has decided to move forward with a coaching structure that is separate from the Tasmanian Tigers in the future,” Gaggin said.
"Damien will continue as senior assistant coach of the Tasmanian Tigers ... (and) on behalf of the Cricket Tasmania board, management and staff, members and fans, I want to thank Damien for his enthusiasm, engagement and overall service to the Hobart Hurricanes.”
Gaggin also said Cricket Tasmania would assess all aspects of the BBL franchise including the coaching structure, performance, list management and recruitment of overseas players.
Wright had said on Monday he hoped to continue in the role. “There is some really exciting new players here, and I just hope I get the chance to work with them again,’’ he said.
“I love doing this job and I love being part of the Hurricanes, and there’s unfinished business.
“I really want to be part of something that is special.”
Ricky Ponting had not entertained the prospect of leading Hobart when asked in Launceston on Friday.
“You never say never, but I am pretty comfortable with where my cricket commitments are at the moment,” he said.
