Callum Harper took a decisive win, however, he really had to work hard to earn the biggest pay day of his career in Australia’s richest super sedan race.
Weather played a factor in the opening night. Heavy rain overnight had track crews working frantically to remove the water from the infield so racing could get underway.
Once it began it was a night of close hard action. South Australian Ryan Alexander topped the points after the first night and was obviously relishing the fast track conditions.
The street stock final was won in convincing style by the indestructible Todd Auton in his first race back at his home track after a heart attack and cancer sidelined him for two years.
The second night of racing saw warmer weather meaning better track conditions for many of the teams.
Entering the final heat, Harper was 11th on points and needed a victory to earn maximum points so he could start near the front.
He greeted the chequered flag only to be penalised for an infield passing move infringement and was relegated to third.
This incensed Harper and made him even more determined to win.
The front row for the final was Ryan Alexander, of South Australia, and Lachlan Onley, of New South Wales, ahead of Tasmanians Brad Smith and David Nicholls.
At the start Smith showed his hand early and rocketed up into second position behind Onley.
Early in the race Harper moved up to challenge Alexander for third and the two battled side by side for several laps bringing the large crowd to their feet.
On lap six Harper made his move down low on the track to challenge Onley for the lead passing successfully and then started to pull away after fending off several challenges from Onley.
A caution on lap 28 saw Adam Beechey retire with a flat tyre and this bunched the field back up again.
Just over half race distance and the leaders were in heavy traffic powering through the back markers.
With 20 laps left to run Onley retired with mechanical issues while chasing Smith.
Smith unfortunately would also retire with less than three laps left to run after battling Jason McPherson.
The run to the flag was Harper from Alexander and McPherson who had dialled the car in for plenty of pace at the end of the race.
A jubilant Harper showed plenty of emotion in his victory speech thanking his family and crew.
