The Bureau of Meteorology has warned damaging winds are expected across the North East on Friday.
About 60 to 70km/h winds and peak gusts above 100 km/h are expected to develop from late morning, easing off later in the afternoon.
A severe weather warning for heavy rainfalls and flash flooding remains in place for the East Coast and inland areas between Cape Portland and Swansea.
SES Regional Manager for the North Mhairi Bradley reminded road users to drive to the conditions.
“People are particularly reminded not to drive, walk, cycle or swim through flood waters,” Ms Bradley said.
“Damaging winds for the areas of George Town, Scottsdale, Bridport, Whitemark, St Helens and surrounding areas are also a factor. Today is not the day to be conducting home and garden maintenance activities. Wind debris poses a serious threat to public safety and where possible, SES advises that people stay indoors.”
The next warning will be issued by 11am.
EARLIER:
Heavy rain that may lead to flash flooding has been forecast for the East Coast and inland areas between Eddystone Point and Swansea on Friday.
A low pressure system expected to develop near King Island has prompted the Bureau of Meteorology to issue a severe weather warning for Tasmania’s North East.
The low is expected to bring heavy rain and strong, gusty east to south-easterly winds to develop on the East Coast during the morning as the low moves east into the Tasman Sea.
Total rainfall is expected to be between 50mm and 80mm but elevated areas are likely to see between 70mm and 100mm.
The majority of this rainfall is expected to fall in the morning with the chance that three-hour totals will reach about 45mm in low-lying areas.
Locations which may be affected include St Helens, Bicheno, Fingal and Scamander.
The State Emergency Service advises people to: supervise children closely, check on family and neighbours, manage pets and livestock, clear drains and gutters prior to weather warning, do not walk, ride or drive through floodwaters and be prepared in case of power outages.
Updated warnings are available through local TV and radio broadcasts and on BOM’s website. For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
