Director of consumer affairs and fair trading Dale Webster said the ban was necessary to protect the Tasmanian community from incurring potentially serious injuries, with more than 100 reported injuries across Australia since 2010. 

There are no known incidents involving these devices causing injury in Tasmania. The ban puts Tasmania in line with all other states.

“Consumers injured from using alcohol fuelled burners range in age… with injuries including second or third degree burns requiring intensive care, skin grafts, operations, lengthy hospital stays and physiotherapy,” Mr Webster said.

The ban excludes products intended for cooking and heating.
