Neville Smith Forest Products is a joint venture between the family, veteran Tasmanian sawmiller Ken Last and former Gunns executive chairmen John Gay.
Australian Securities and Investments Commission documents show that Mr Gay, Mr Last, James Neville Smith and his father, Richard, are directors of Neville Smith Forest Products.
The documents also show that Mr Gay and his wife, Erica, own 25 per cent of the private company after buying $125,000 worth of shares last month.
The Neville Smith family, previously a long-term timber industry player, exited the hardwood timber industry in 2004.
As a result of Gunns leaving the hardwood processing sector, the family, along with Mr Gay and Mr Last, decided to get back into the industry, arranging with Gunns to buy its Remount Road kiln-dried plant at Mowbray.
From next month, the company and its 30 employees will begin supplying Tasmanian oak products locally and overseas.
The company has acquired Gunns' inventory stock and plans to buy green timber from private sawmills around Tasmania.
