Devonport’s Ethan Wyllie was in contention to drive at the Australian Kart Championships when he hurt his foot resulting in major surgery.
His family stayed at a Ronald McDonald House on the mainland while Ethan received treatment at the Melbourne Royal Children’s Hospital.
AWC media and promotions officer Stuart Lee said the donation was about giving back to the charity that supported their own.
“(Ethan) couldn’t go racing and his family had a lot of medical bills. Ronald McDonald really helped them out,” Mr Lee said.
“We thought the academy would do a bit of fundraising for them throughout the year and that’s what we did.
“At every race meeting, we’ve had the buckets out and just asked for donations. It was five or six race meetings that we went to.”
The motorsport academy assists children who race go-karts with their expenses to compete nationally.
Hobart’s Ronald McDonald House executive officer Penny Richardson said the house supported 400 rural and regional families a year.
“This year we will be home for eight families at Christmas time… the gift from AWC Motorsport Academy will ensure we can provide families with all the things which make Christmas special,” she said.
