Eleven years after the popular player collapsed in the Bellerive nets and died of a heart attack, family friends and teammates united around the annual fixture now played in his memory.
Unveiled by Mason’s dad Winston and nephew Lachie, an honour board records the winner of the Scott Mason Medal in each season’s Sheffield Shield fixture between Tasmania and Victoria.
it already boasts a distinguished list of recipients including Test players Peter Siddle, Ed Cowan, George Bailey, Matthew Wade and Rob Quiney.
Former Test spinner Xavier Doherty, who followed the trail blazed by Mason from George Town to Hobart via Launceston, said the driven batsman was fondly remembered in the Tigers’ dressing room.
“Scott’s never far from our thoughts and this game every year is particularly special for us with the Scott Mason Medal up for grabs,” Doherty said.
“Scott was someone who fiercely loved cricket. He lived and breathed it.
“He was a real mentor for me. He wasn’t a great of the game but was just starting his career when his life was taken from him.
“We still speak of him because he was this energetic, infectious character that was really good for the team.”
Cricket Tasmania photographer and historian Rick Smith has written a book called Scott Mason – A Memoir which is available at Bellerive for $19.95.
