The red handfish and Ziebell’s handfish are only found in Tasmania. The spotted handfish has been on the endangered list since 2013, meaning three of the 14 species are now endangered.
The red handfish is found east of Hobart in Fredrick Henry Bay and sightings of Ziebells’s handfish has been recorded on Tasmania’s east. A recovery plan was approved in 2015.
