A 35-year-old Prospect man has been charged with murder after another man was found dead at his Summerhill home on Thursday.
Police say they attended the scene about 1am after an ambulance was called to a unit in Kerry Court following an alleged altercation.
A 56-year-old man found dead at the home suffered “significant injuries” to his head and upper body, police will allege.
The victim has been identified as Peter John Fitzgerald.
Tasmania Police Detective Inspector Darren Hopkins said officers had spoken to a number of people who were allegedly at the victim’s home.
“We believe there were three people initially and a fourth became involved a short time later,” he said.
Det Insp Hopkins said police were still investigating the circumstances around what led to the alleged incident.
“We believe [the injuries] were a result of an altercation earlier in the night … there are no weapons at this stage,” he said.
“We certainly believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor.”
Forensic Science Service Tasmania were continuing their examinations on Thursday afternoon with crime scenes established at three separate addresses in Summerhill.
The alleged offender will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Friday at 11am.
Investigations are continuing and anyone with information should contact Tasmania Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.
