A young Launceston local has been awarded an opportunity of a life time. Susan Katawzynski received a New Colombo Plan scholarship and will move to Hong Kong to study primary education.

The University of Tasmania student is studying the same degree here, but hopes to use the opportunity to become more culturally aware.

“I’ll be able to bring that back to my students in the future as well so that they will be more culturally aware too,” she said.

Miss Katawzynski is a mum to three-year-old Mabel and aims to show other young parents it’s possible to continue their education after becoming a parent. Her daughter and soon-to-be-husband will also move to Hong Kong.

“I find that a lot of teenage parents sort of think that when they have a child young that that is the end of their life,” she said.

Miss Katawzynski said this opportunity will put her ahead of where she imagined she would be at this age.

“It’s that massive head start I wanted to get,” she said.

Miss Katawzynski acknowledged she had a lot of other things to consider before moving her family overseas, including safety, but was excited for the opportunity.

“The university is ranked so well, it’ll be an amazing opportunity and it’ll be so much fun,” she said.
