The council is keen to woo RV dollars - worth an estimated $500 a week for each vehicle to the local economy.
But it must be careful not to breach national competition policy in the process. This means no more cheap or free overnight access for RV users on council-owned property.
A council report warns that there is a growing trend by RV users to park in the city overnight, which has prompted local caravan park operators to complain to police.
The First Basin car park at Cataract Gorge is another RV magnet under the spotlight.
The state government wants greater enforcement of the problem areas, which extend to the popular Lilydale Falls and Myrtle Park. Charges at the park are paid to the Myrtle Park hall committee, which uses the fees to carry out improvements on the facilities.
The review could see those fees go directly to the council.
The Local Government Association of Tasmania has warned the council that its two new and free RV dump stations at Invermay Park and St Leonards picnic ground are likely to be a problem. The stations were installed to earn Launceston RV-friendly status but have drawn the ire of a caravan park, which went to the Tasmanian Economic Regulator.
The increase in the number of RV users to Tasmania isn't all bad news for caravan parks. Launceston Holiday Park in Legana has booked 21 motorhomes this April. Manager Kylie Cole said any new policy needed to meet a ``happy balance'' between freedom for RV users and profitability for caravan parks.
