The boundary currently intersects West Tamar’s municipal boundaries at Muddy Creek in Legana, leaving about 70 per cent of the electorate’s population in Bass and the remainder in the north-east corner of Lyons.
Councillor Tim Woinarski, who will put forward the motion, said the need to absorb all West Tamar residents into the electorate of Bass had become apparent during this year’s federal election.
“It's something I've been considering since I got elected to council because it is difficult when you have a state and a federal election that council has to lobby politicians in both electorates,” Cr Woinarski said.
“Sometimes it works to our advantage but more often than not it is difficult to get a complete all-over package for the West Tamar.”
Cr Woinarski said the far-reaching geographical profile of Lyons meant it made sense to integrate all West Tamar residents into Bass.
“Whichever representatives are in Lyons are getting pulled every which way because it’s such a big electorate.
“I think that what happens in Bass has a bigger impact on the West Tamar than what happens in Lyons.”
The motion comes as the Australian Electoral Commission conducts its first redistribution of Tasmanian federal electoral divisions since 2009, with individuals and organisations encouraged to submit proposals for names and boundaries of the state’s electoral divisions.
Cr Woinarski said the review presented an ideal opportunity for council to pursue the electoral assimilation of all West Tamar residents.
“My understanding is that Bass needs to pick up a certain number of voters, whether or not there’s too many voters in the northern part of the electorate I don't know.
“I’m sure there are other councils in the same boat as us and some might actually consider jumping into Lyons.
“The electoral commission might just say ‘not even remotely interested’, but this motion is about putting it out there and if it’s passed, taking the first step to make a formal approach and saying ‘this is what we'd like to do’.”
