The West Tamar Council has pressed ahead with repairs to the Beaconsfield Mine site, agreeing to engage vertical mine specialists the Mancala Group, despite no formal commitment of federal funding.

At a special meeting on Tuesday, Councillor Peter Kearney said the iconic Hart Shaft head frame was an important part of the municipalities economic infrastructure.
“There is a lot of work to be done to find out exactly what we are dealing with here. This is consistent with Beaconsfield rescue history because its a fairly unique exercise ... I am sure there will be a great deal of interest and the mining industry will be very interested to see how it goes,” he said.
General manager Rolph Vos said a technical oversight group would be appointed, due to the signifcant uncertainty about how to move forward.
”As we reach points in the process that require extra consideration or a review by council, we’ll have an additional check layer,” he said.
