It is alleged an older student tried to force a younger student to perform a sex act on him on school grounds in September.
It is understood the victim reported the alleged crime to a fellow student, who alerted teachers.
Tasmania Police said it had received a complaint about an incident from a student.
"The investigation is ongoing, in consultation with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. As such it would be inappropriate to comment any further at this stage,” Detective Inspector Darren Hopkins said.
Scottsdale High School would not comment on Friday afternoon.
Education Department deputy secretary of learning Trudy Pearce said parents had been notified of an "inappropriate behaviour incident".
She said the department had also conducted its own investigation into the incident.
“All incidents of inappropriate behaviour are taken extremely seriously by the school and all students involved and their families are receiving support," she said.
“All matters that may be an offence are reported to Tasmania Police and as this matter has been reported it would not be appropriate to comment further.
“The school maintains a major focus on providing a positive learning environment for students and strategies are in place to encourage appropriate and respectful behaviour, particularly in the school environment.”
