Over the years the band has shown no weaknesses in creativity or originality, and the highly anticipated Dissociation follows through with their experimentalism in what could be considered an ode to their almost schizophrenic discography.
Opening track Limerent Death perfectly showcases the familiar Dillinger sound, riddled with groovy riffs, sporadic fret work and visceral drums. It’s a welcome to what is a highly varied and complex album.
Final track Dissociation really feels like a farewell song and as it ends with those angelic strings, I can't help but wonder what they would have done next.
Some of the stand-out songs include Symptom of Terminal Illness for its haunting vocals and emotionally provocative lyrics, and Nothing to Forget’s satisfying mix of catchy distorted riffs, atmospheric dissonance and range of influence.
Dissociation is a fitting end to a stellar, boundary pushing career that keeps you invested from start to finish. It's a testament to their unpredictability and everything we have grown to love for 20 years.
It's The Dillinger Escape Plan and it is excellent.
