Fast forward a few years and the pair, now known as Hockey Dad, have just released their debut album Boronia and their surf-pop sounds have proven popular with audiences.
The duo will be in Launceston next month to play alongside Bodyjar and Luca Brasi at the Til The Wheels Fall Off festival.
Stephenson said after playing together for so long, it was good to finally get some new music out.
“We started playing because we had some old gear in my shed and there was no surf – we just got bored and started jamming,” he said.
“It was good to finally get [the album] out and see what people thought of it. Now we just get to tour and play the songs all over the place.
“It's nice to see people enjoying the songs as much as we do. It definitely makes us excited to do another record.”
Stephenson said he was keen to get to Tassie and play to a new audience.
“We have only been to Tassie once before and it was really fun, so we can't wait to come back and have a few beers to some awesome bands.”
Til The Wheels Fall Off will be held from November 4 to 6 at the Launceston Workers Club.
Three-day tickets are $105 through Oztix.
